Can't Forget Your Past
The day of leaving my country one of my mentors will call me and stress the importance of my returning and not forgetting where I came from. As I meditate on his words today and that was said the word Sankofa came to mind. One of my favorite symbols of Africa, is the one that sits across from this text, and I will explain now what it means, well I will borrow a definition and then tell you what it means to me :) sounds much better lol...Moving on!!!
Sankofa is an Akan word that means, "We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward; so we understand why and how we came to be who we are today."
The Akan (Ghanaian vernacular) word, Sankofa means "one must return to the past in order to move forward."
The symbol of Sankofa is that of a bird whose head is faced in the opposite direction of its body. This is emphasising on the fact that even though the bird is advancing, it periodically makes it a point to examine/ return to it's past, since this is the only way for one to have a better future.
Some also interpret Sankofa to mean, no matter how far away one travels they must always return home. However Sankofa is interpreted, the basic and important meaning still lies; one's past is an important aspect of one's future. So in order to make the best of one's future, one must visit one's past.
Truth is you can never live in the future, you never will. There is present and past; that's it, and we must use both to make present decisions that influence future outcome that we have no control over. To be quite honest with you the best life to live is a life filled with simplicity and gratitude; these qualities help you to remain calm and happy, loved and appreciated. Well, I hope you learned something new today, if not of course you can always hit me up and I can explain more thoroughly.
Until next time, have a great week !!!!
All the blessings,
Leo
